Classic Inside 10/2010

EDITORIAL

We don't slavishly follow F1 but, with this year's F1 season just hours away, it's time to write a few words on what might happen in 2010. This is the 'eve of season' comment, with 'were we really surprised that Schumacher and Hamilton collided?' and 'which team will have Alonso now?' conjecture to follow.

Let me state right away that I'm no expert on Grand Prix racing. I am, however, magnetically drawn to a TV–side armchair when the season starts and greatly look forward to Sunday's race. Alonso and Hamilton head the betting for overall honours at the end of the year, with the Old Man (Michael Schumacher, for it is he) at 4/1. Not bad for a 41–year–old.

So, here you go, my predictions for 2010. Hamilton to win the Championship by a narrow margin, with Alonso and Button close runners–up and Schumacher winning races but not quite living up to the pre–season expectations. There will be some surprising race–winners (I'm covering myself, there...) and the top–level teams will blow the plucky newcomers into the weeds.

Not that modern Grand Prix circuits would be so untidy, of course.

Finally, a brief word on Sir Stirling Moss's recent accident at home. 'Two broken ankles, four broken bones to his foot, skin abrasions and four chipped vertebrae' sound like the outcome of a hefty prang in a Maserati in the Fifties, not your average spill chez nous.

Sir Stirling, however, is not your everyday octogenarian and is recovering in hospital with his usual high spirits. We send him our very best wishes.
