Editorial

An invitation to hear a presentation from not only Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo but also the company’s Vice-President Piero Ferrari and General Manager Jean Todt is (like the cars they produce) not an everyday occurrence.

The reason was the official launch of the Classiche division that’s role you can read about fully below and I think the decision to go ahead with this programme has two important aspects. Firstly, it shows once again that maintaining heritage and tradition is essential for manufacturers, owners and enthusiasts alike. No one can do that like Ferrari – and it’s probably why you like Classic Driver, the mixture of ‘old’ and ‘new’.

Secondly, it draws a line in the sand in the vexatious issue of fakes and well-meaning ‘replicas’ however beautifully executed. If it’s a fake that purports to be another car for financial gain well you are now going to be in bigger trouble than before, and if it’s a nice ‘re-creation’ well, fine, but don’t expect it to have any official sanction and think again before you tear apart a car that’s value is rising (250 GTE or PF Coupé) in order to clothe it in faux GTO or SWB bodywork.

This is an important point in time for the collecting fraternity and we’re pleased to be one of the first to give you the news.

Until next week, with a report of the Silverstone Classic meeting that is starting as I write.
