1990 Alpina Z1 RLE

Zwischen dem 5. Juli 1990 und dem 19. September 1991 entstanden in der Buchloer Automobilmanufaktur 66 Exemplare des BMW ALPINA Roadster Limited Edition (RLE) auf Basis des BMW Z1. Ein Modell, das nicht nur optisch für Aufsehen sorgte, sondern auch mit technischen Raffinessen und einem extraordinären Fahrgefühl begeisterte.

Schon die Basis eine Legende: Der BMW Z1
Das Z steht für Zukunft: Ursprünglich wurde der BMW Z1 als Forschungsfahrzeug von der 1985 gegründeten BMW Technik GmbH unter der Leitung von Ulrich Bez entwickelt. Der Roadster mit Front-Mittelmotor, Stahlblech-Monocoquechassis, Kunststoff-Außenhaut und Türen, die auf Knopfdruck in den Seitenschwellern verschwinden, kannte kein Vorbild und begeisterte als Fahrzeugstudie 1987 das Publikum der Internationalen Automobil-Ausstellung in Frankfurt. Letztendlich schaffte es der BMW Z1 dann 1988 auch zur Serienreife: Selbst die versenkbaren Türen erhielten die Straßenzulassung und verliehen dem BMW Z1 von Anfang an Kultstatus. 8000 Exemplare umfasste die damalige BMW Kleinserie, welche die beliebte BMW Z Modellreihe begründete.

Exclusive Edition
Auf die Kleinserie folgte die limitierte Edition: ALPINA verlieh dem BMW Z1 schon äußerlich mit eleganten 20-Speichen-Rädern und dem ALPINA Deko-Set, den unverkennbaren Exterieurzierstreifen, noch mehr Exklusivität. Doch auch an der Motorentechnik wurde weiter gefeilt: Durch ein Plus von 200 Kubik, ALPINA Zylinderkopfbearbeitung, Mahle-Gusskolben und eine andere Nockenwelle wurde die Leistung gegenüber dem BMW Serienmodell um 30 PS auf 200 PS gesteigert. Das Drehmoment erhöhte sich um 39 Nm auf 261 Nm und verlieh dem limitierten Roadster spürbar mehr Temperament. So sprintet der BMW ALPINA RLE in 7,1 Sekunden von 0 auf 100 km/h. Frischluft-Fahrspaß par excellence – schließlich dürfen die Schwellertüren selbst während der Fahrt geöffnet bleiben.

Nur 66 Exemplare für die Welt
Besonders begehrt war der BMW ALPINA RLE bei den detail- und technikaffinen Kunden aus Japan: Mehr als die Hälfte der produzierten Exemplare wurden ins Land der aufgehenden Sonne verschifft, in dem das Basismodell BMW Z1 nicht verfügbar war. 31 Exemplare wurden in Europa zugelassen, in Deutschland, Großbritannien und den Niederlanden. Die unverbindliche Preisempfehlung für das Buchloer Liebhaberstück lag damals inkl. 14 % MwSt bei 116.000,- DM.

1990 Alpina Z1 RLE

Between July 5, 1990 and September 19, 1991, 66 units of the BMW ALPINA Roadster Limited Edition (RLE) based on the BMW Z1 were built at the Buchloer Automobilmanufaktur. A model that not only caused a sensation visually, but also inspired with technical refinements and an extraordinary driving experience.

Even the basis is a legend: The BMW Z1
The Z stands for future: the BMW Z1 was originally developed as a research vehicle by BMW Technik GmbH, which was founded in 1985 under the direction of Ulrich Bez. The roadster with front-mid engine, sheet steel monocoque chassis, plastic outer skin and doors that disappear into the side sills at the touch of a button had no precedent and thrilled the audience at the 1987 International Motor Show in Frankfurt as a vehicle study. The BMW Z1 was finally ready for series production in 1988: even the retractable doors were approved for road use, giving the BMW Z1 cult status right from the start. The BMW small series at that time comprised 8000 units, which established the popular BMW Z model series.

Exclusive Edition
The small series was followed by the limited edition: ALPINA gave the BMW Z1 even more exclusivity on the outside with elegant 20-spoke wheels and the ALPINA Deco Set, the unmistakable exterior stripes. The engine technology has also been further refined: With an increase of 200 cubic meters, ALPINA cylinder head machining, Mahle cast pistons and a different camshaft, the power output was increased by 30 hp to 200 hp compared to the BMW production model. Torque increased by 39 Nm to 261 Nm, giving the limited edition roadster noticeably more temperament. The BMW ALPINA RLE sprints from 0 to 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds. Fresh air driving pleasure par excellence - after all, the side doors can remain open even while driving.

Only 66 units for the world
The BMW ALPINA RLE was particularly coveted by customers from Japan with an affinity for detail and technology: more than half of the cars produced were shipped to the Land of the Rising Sun, where the base model BMW Z1 was not available. 31 units were registered in Europe, in Germany, Great Britain and the Netherlands. The recommended retail price for the Buchloe collector's item was DM 116,000 including 14% VAT.
